A few months ago, we moved to a 4-day working week for all full-time staff. This was not about compressed hours or a drop in salary but an extra day off a week as a reward to our hardworking and dedicated employees.
This wasn’t a step we took lightly and we spent the year prior to the move reviewing the way we work and implementing procedures so that service levels would remain high and a day away from the office did not lead to a mountain of work waiting on your desk for your return.
So, how have the last few months been?
Personally, I have found it great as it allows me to spend some time with my 3-year-old before she goes off to school next year. Other’s have used their spare day to work on personal goals with one even starting a university course which has always been a dream of theirs. So far, the only downside we have encountered is a decrease in flexibility for the rest of the week, for example, I have to be in the office every Thursday as I am the only director working on that day – the same goes for our MD on a Tuesday.
All in all, things seem to be working out, but we will keep on monitoring the situation, as we do with all areas of the business, and tweak things here and there as necessary.
