R&D tax relief claims are made under self-assessment which means that most claims are not checked and most companies are not able to say their claims have been successful – even if they have received money from HMRC.
This means that inaccuracies within claims will go unnoticed – potentially forever or they could be picked up a few years down the line. HMRC is currently undertaking a number of initiatives to ensure that it picks up more of these inaccuracies and soon a lot of companies will be asked to justify their claims – some which thought they had been successfully claiming for years.
Compiling a robust R&D claim takes time – if it all seems a bit too simple then getting a second opinion might be a good idea.
